Here at the GirlyPC home office, we have a big, clumsy, slobbery dog and he has a floppy cushion in the corner to cuddle up on. (Though he prefers to lay in front of the French doors and guard the garden from renegade squirrels and wicked blue jays.)
It’s getting a little worn and I was eyeballing it today wondering if I wanted to try tackling sewing something new or just buying something new.
I found a bunch of great sewing patterns that might be perfect, and spent about an hour drooling over fabric patterns that would look great on the dark hardwood floors in the office.
Then I started thinking about how much time sewing a dog bed would take (especially to make it super durable which means a liner, lots of interfacing, and double and triple stitching the seams)… And stuffing the darn thing, because he likes an extra cushy bed. That’d be both costly and a pain–wrestling all that stuffing in!
So, I’m back at square one, figuring out whether it’s worth it to make one or if I ought to just buy something less-than-perfect.
Your turn! Where does your pet sleep in the office?
All of this weekend pondering led to a question–does your pet(s) have a special spot in your home office?
Are pets banned entirely? Or have they claimed a spot you’d prefer they vacated (like your computer keyboard)?
Did you purchase a bed that goes with your home office decor or do you just use an old towel?
I’d love to hear how you tackle the challenge of where the pets sleep in your home office!

My office is strictly no-pets-allowed as I make dresses for little girls and enough people are allergic to cats that I keep a strict pet-free-zone policy. That doesn’t stop them from trying to follow me in there some mornings, though!
We have three terriers that follow me everywhere, including into the office. The office doubles as our guest room, so the three of them pile on the bed–sadly, their nails have snagged the bedspread pretty badly, but they look so cute on there in a row like stuffed animals!
Two dogs, three cats, and a parrot. And they’re all allowed to hang out in my studio with me. In fact, I wouldn’t have it any other way (why else would I work from home?) My office is a former garage in the backyard, with plenty of space for everyone. The dogs have beds from LLBean, the cats share a cat tree, and the parrot usually likes to hang out in the beams of the ceiling. My menagerie keeps me inspired.
Eight cats. I know, I know. But, yeah, they hang out in the office with me except when I have an important call. Three of them are pretty anti-social and usually stay out of the office, but the other five… Two have laid claim to *me* as bed (one on my lap, and one *behind* me on the chair–as if he were a lumbar pillow) and the other three tend to alternate, mostly prefering the floor where the sun streams in from the window. No beds in the office for ’em, but there’s usually at least one catnip ball rolling underfoot.
I am so lucky to own my business, my dogs come with me every day. They have leather beds with sheepskin rugs to lay on under my feet. They also curl up on my over sized chair and make themselves very comfortable. I really work for them and they make sure I know that.
My two cats aren’t allowed in the office ever since one of them *ate* some really important notes, so right around lunch time one sits outside the office door mewing while the other (the one who ate the notes) flings himself at the door until I get up to give them a snack and a bit of a cuddle.
I made a bed for our two cuties (both Westies)–it wasn’t as hard as I’d expected. It was about the same cost as a nice bed, and has held up much better than the ones they’d had before. Of course, that might be because they used to chew on their beds and now I put a stop to that but quick. The reason I made it myself was, like you say, because I couldn’t find anything that really went with my office very well. My husband made a little platform with premade legs for it to rest on, and I used one of those kids chair patterns so it looks great with my cottage-cozy office. If you’d like to know the pattern I used, let me know.
I don’t have any pets at the moment, but just had to say that’s the cutest photo!
It’s been delightful reading all of your comments–thanks everyone!
@Susan–does the leather seem to hold up well–that would definitely look really stylish, but I’d be worried about the claw damage ;-).
@Leslie–I’d love to know what pattern you used!
@Karma–I cracked up over the image of all those cats–too cute!
